, soviet documents, documents of the former soviet union have become available to researchers. the soviets played a pivotal war in the 1967 war. they precipitated the crisis. i was able to go to moscow and access some of these documents. there's been a new opening in two of the three major arab participants in the war. in jordan and in egypt, there's a tremendous wave of publications about the war, phepl oeurs, studies, even the release of certain documents which is rare in the arab world about 1967. the only place this has not occurred is in syria. in syria, officially the war never occurred. there is not one single official book -- and all books in syria are official -- about the 1967 war. how the average syria believes israel came into possession of the golan heights is a mystery to me. >> you were born where? >> i was born in the tiny town in upstate new york but raised in new jersey. >> when did you first go to israel? >> i first went when i was 15. i went to work on a farm. i worked in alfalfa, i worked in the cows, i became a cowboy. i was a lousy farmer. i went and studied history.

a long time bedrock of union employment could soon become the nation's 24th right to work state. protesters rallied at the state house and senate on thursday. both chambers passed separate bills banning mandatory union dues from non-union members. the republican governor said he would sign the bill when they are sent to him. tech stocks gave wall street a modest lift. the dow finished 39 points higher on thursday while the nasdaq was up 15 points. apple one of the tech stocks that led the stock market said it will move some of its mass computer production from china to the u.s. it accounts for less than 20% of apple's business. the rest is from ipod and ipad production. one factor may be that tiny labor costs are rising much faster than u.s. wages. and the securities and exchange commission is investigating netflix and the company's ceo. hastings is dismissing the s.e.c.'s claim that his facebook post in july may have boosted the online video company stock price. at the time he mentioned how much netflix viewing had increased. the stock price rose 19% over a two day period. the

. the legislation would bar unions from requiring non-union workers to pay those union fees. democrats met with the governor to urge a veto. and carollers gathered singing modified christmas songs in protest of the proposal. president obama said the legislation is about giving workers the right to work for less money. of course, the president enjoying a lot of support from the unions. if this does indeed happen, michigan will become the 24th right-to-work state. but governor rick schneider is backed by a full house and senate of republicans. so this could be easily passed. >> you're seeing a conservative movement to get a better handle on unions. and deal with them better. but the thing about michigan, it's considered to be the birthplace of the nation's modern labor movement. so if it happens there, it could happen in other states and put into motion a domino effect. we saw the wisconsin battle. ohio has dealt with these labor issues. so changing winds in the world of labor and michigan, if they go this way, that would be a big move here. some people argue it makes sense to give workers t

of los angeles and long beach, california reopened today after port operators and the worker's union reached an agreement late tuesday. the union said it won new protections against job outsourcing. port officials said during the walkout, they were unable to move some $760 million worth of cargo a day. wall street had a day of ups and downs and investors watched economic reports and weighed chances for a fiscal cliff deal in washington. the dow jones industrial average gained more than 82 points to close at 13,034. but the nasdaq fell nearly 23 points to close at 2,973. the day's big loser was apple, down more than 6% over concerns that smart phone sales are lagging. former texas congressman jack brooks has died. he served 42 years in the house, and was in the dallas motorcade on november 22nd, 1963 when president kennedy was assassinated. hours later, brooks was on hand as vice president and fellow texan lyndon johnson was sworn in to the presidency. later, brooks helped author the 1964 civil rights act, and he drafted the articles of impeachment against president nixon. jack brooks

of legislation moving forward which would offer an option for anyone going into a quote union employer, whether to join a unioner to not, that this will be fought and fought hard. it is likely to pass and likely to be signed. the question is, what will unions and their allies do in response. they really have nothing to lose by raising a stink about this. you will see protesters up in lansing today, tomorrow and maybe for some time. megyn: we have a big story developing in washington over our debt crisis. the national debt stands at $16 trillion. it was $10.6 trillion when president obama first took office and it has increased roughly 50% over the course of his first term. now president obama is insisting that any deal on this fiscal cliff which has automatic tax hikes and spending cuts as of january one, they are trying to avert that. he says any deal on this must include an end to the debt ceiling all together. he wants complete power to raise the country's limit by himself. he doesn't want to have to get congressional approval. that is a demand stirring strong response from republicans today.

-sex marriage unions. we got the word and our correspondent is with us on the phone now. shannon, what is the story? >>shannon: they decided to take up to different gay marriage cases. you mention the one from california, you may remember proposition eight. the voters passed a measure that allows only the recognition of one man, one woman as a "marriage." a federal court overturned that. that want on appeal to the supreme court and they decided they will weigh in on that fight. in addition there were eight cases on the diagnosis -- the docket on the defense of marriage act and a portion only recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman and has been challenged dozens of times. they agreed to take up a case dealing with defense of marriage act. two different cases but both going to the same issues. they are different on technical and legal points but the bottom line is the same and the court has told us it will hear two gay marriage cases and we expect the earliest to get on the calendar is march of 2013 so that means we will have a decision like we did with the president's health ca

retiring and i don't have the luxury of the soviet union falling. the recipes that worked in the late 1990's worked. they don't work now. we have a different set of problems. host: from new york city, democrat blind, go ahead. caller: thank you for taking my call. even if we go over the fiscal cliff, we need a bigger plan because it does not even balance the budget. i don't think we really have a supply-side problem. they talk about cutting taxes on the right and i think there are so many people out of work and i think you need to get these people to work. i just think we have a demand issue, not a supply issue. if you're out of work, you cannot pay taxes. guest: he is exactly right -- no one is talking about a fiscal cliff that will solve the problem. there is no grand bargain being discussed except in the most general outline terms. there is enough to be -- nothing close to being politically acceptable. we're only talking of something of that will allow people to get through this. in the short term, we need to have fiscal policy that may get the deficit higher than what it would be. ben
